Scienze computazionali e energia sostenibile: borsa di Dottorato @UniBolzano
PhD position focusing on the development of fast, parallel matrix solvers to tackle the computational challenges in thermonuclear fusion simulations. Fusion energy holds the promise of clean, sustainable energy, but modeling plasma behavior inside reactors such as Tokamaks requires solving highly complex and large-scale mathematical problems. Our project aims to significantly improve the efficiency of these simulations by advancing state-of-the-art computational techniques.
The successful candidate will work on designing novel matrix solvers optimized for parallel computing architectures (e.g., multi-core CPUs, GPUs) using MPI and CUDA libraries. The project will also explore machine learning (ML) methods to speed up specific operations in these solvers, such as preconditioning and matrix compression, helping reduce computational time and memory usage. While the focus is on thermonuclear fusion energy, the solvers developed during this PhD can be applied to other fields such as computational electromagnetics and acoustics.
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in numerical methods, high-performance computing, and a keen interest in applying machine learning to scientific computing challenges. Previous experience with parallel programming (MPI, CUDA) is highly desirable.
